Caroline looked at him as tears streamed down her face. She was sure her mascara was running and she was definitely not looking her best but at the moment she didn’t care.
“I trusted you.” She sobbed, turning away so she didn’t have to look at him. She could see the tears welling up in his eyes as well. She hated to see him cry and it only led her to want to comfort him. She didn’t want to feel that way now.
“You have to understand-“
“How could you? After everything, after all I’ve told you about- “she cut off her own words as she turned to look him in the eye.
The heartbroken look on her face hurt Klaus- he never wanted to hurt her. He needed to protect her, if only she could understand that.
“They were after me and they would’ve used anything they could’ve to get to me. They would’ve used you! I wouldn’t have been able to deal with them had I been worrying about you, love.” Klaus explained, trying to get her to see reason.
“So you compel me?” Caroline asked. “I’m not a little girl Nik, I can handle myself. We could’ve worked it out- together. But instead, you lie to me, you invade my thoughts, you steal my memories. And then just come back and expect me to forgive you. I can’t even look at you right now.” Her body shook as she let another sob overcome her.
“I’m sorry that you’re upset about it but I’m not sorry for doing it. I did what I had to do to protect you and now we’re both safe.” Klaus said, taking a gentle but firm hold of her face. “Now we can be together again.”
“I can’t trust you anymore.” Her voice shook as she told him that, although it was true, she could feel herself giving in to him.
“Not right now, but you will again. I’ll earn it back, you know I will.” She hated that the was right about that. As much as she wanted to hate him for what he did, she knew she could never do that. She loved him too much.
“Just leave me alone for the night.” She said, turning away from him to go lie down on the bed. Their bed, in their house, he brought her back here after seeking her out and returning her memories. It was the first time she has been here in over three years.
She felt him lie down beside her and sighed, about to tell him to leave when he spoke. “I’m never leaving you again sweetheart, you can be sure of that.” He pressed a kiss to the side of her head and she automatically sank back into his arms.
She could try to be mad at him all she wanted, but she couldn’t deny how right it felt to be back in his arms.
She told the corniest jokes, the silliest stories she had and the weirdest quirks about herself and it never failed to make him smile. She guesses it is just her strange addiction. Klaroline one-shot
